Why $427
In February, Arion Carter's girlfriend, Mariah Bryant, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. When treatment took her hair, he shaved his head too.
A few months earlier, Arion had declared for the NFL Draft. His agency covered a $427 flight to a workout. Before the NFL Combine a foot injury sent him back to Tennessee for one more season. He repaid the $427 and self-reported it to the NCAA.
The NCAA suspended him anyway.
Arion decided the number would stand for something else: Gratitude.
For every tackle he makes this season, he's donating $427. Every sack, $500. Every interception or forced fumble, $1,000. Every touchdown, $5,000.
The money goes to Girls in Real Life Situations, Inc. (GIRLS), the 501(c)(3) nonprofit his mother, Sheteka Alexander, founded. GIRLS directs it to cancer organizations such as, MVTCP - a partnership between Meharry Medical College, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Tennessee State University, and Sisters Network of Nashville that help women cover their bills while they're in treatment.
